Update & success story :
Through the kind donation made by the corporate donors and by the CSR grant support 2 middle schools in Karasangal & Athanachery villages of kundrathur block, Kancheepuram district,Tamilnadu state,India, has been set up with computer lab facility and 250+ students will be benefited every year. A teacher was appointed to train the students !

PRESENT NEED & PROJECT DETAILS ABOUT 2 OTHER SUBURB SCHOOLS :

GERUGAMBAKKAM & KOVUR PUDUVATTARAM SCHOOLS

Proposed Project Objectives:

• To give computer education and life skill training to the government school students.
• To imparting skills in computer and personality development.
• To improve self-confident for applying the knowledge in future for their development.
• To teach basic computer skill and self-awareness through life skill training.
• To decrease students dropouts in public schools
• To strengthen public schools through quality education for low income families
children.

Need for the project:

SDG – Sustainable Development Goal 4 aims at ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promotes lifelong learning opportunities for all.
The right to education is a human right and indispensable for the exercise of other human rights. Quality education aims to ensure the development of a fully-rounded human being. It is one of the most powerful tools in lifting socially excluded children out of poverty and into society.

WEEDS functions with 1400 women Self Help Groups (SHG) in the districts of Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, Chengalpet and Chennai suburb districts and generates societal, economical awareness and doing development activities among people. While serving, WEEDS identified these government/public school with lack of computer lab facility.

During our field work we have found the children with inadequacy with computer knowledge and personality development. For the following school and location we are going to work:

Name of the Schools : Kundrathur Panchayat union government/public middle School Location : Gerugambakkam & Kovur Panchayaths – Kancheepuram district
Target students : Classes from 6th to 8th grade
Beneficiaries for 1 years : 300+ students

We found that children from these villages are from economically poor background who are not aware of the computer skill and are lack social skills. After completing their secondary school without any basic computer knowledge they choose computer science as their major subject in the higher secondary. Even while pursuing their higher secondary with all strong/by memorization they get pass from schools but still lack in computer literacy because of no computer lab facility in the public school.

Again they struggle in their college education during their internships, Projects due to lack of computer knowledge. Even though they have completed Graduation/ Higher education, due to lack of computer knowledge and skills many students are working at textiles shops, jewellery shop, garment factory and other low grade menial jobs.

We are seeing many children from our SHG’s families working for low salary but completed graduation/degree. In today’s world majority of the works are getting digitalized. 99% of our day to day activity involves with technology. So we believe if we give students basic computer knowledge and life skill training, definitely will be a stepping stone for them to improve their quality of life.

In the mean time, Life skills’ training is essential for to develop a youth at his early age. So, train the youths students along with computer literacy will help them to concentrate and attain both the knowledge & wisdom of life.

Implementation plan:
• For setting up the computer lab – Computers, Tables and chairs will be purchased and setup. New Facilitator will be given training about the programme by WEEDS. The Trainer will teach the students of classes 6th – 8th Grade about the basics of computers in both schools. Weekly twice the teacher will visit the schools and train the students and will take life-skills classes on Friday. The Students will learn the basics of computers – both practical and theoretical methods to be used to teach students.

•For life skill training – The Trainer will mentor/ train the student according in various life building moral topics such are Self-awareness Empathy, Critical Thinking,Creative thinking,Decision Making,Problem Solving,Effective Communication,Interpersonal relationship,Coping with stress,Coping with emotions, Financial literacy etc.,

Duration of the intervention: 5 Years

Outcome of the Project:

 – Through our computer education, the students will get good basic knowledge in operating Computer.
 – Through life skill training students will be developed with good personality and attitude.
 – The Computer Literacy & Life Skill Training will definitely change the lives of rural students.
– We can definitely see a increase of students strength in public schools.
